Let me start off by saying how grateful I am for all the love and support after the assassination attempt at my rally on Saturday. As you all know, that bullet came really close—just a quarter of an inch away from taking my life. A lot of you have been asking me what happened, so let me clarify that for you. I’ll make sure you hear it straight from me, just this once.”

“Honestly, it’s just too painful to talk about. It was a warm, beautiful evening in Butler Township, Pennsylvania. The music was blasting, and the campaign was going really well. I walked up to the stage, and the crowd went wild. Everyone was in great spirits. I started speaking passionately and confidently, feeling really good about it because I was talking about the awesome job my administration did on immigration. Behind me to the right, there was a big screen showing…”

“Under my leadership, the results were absolutely incredible. As I was looking at the chart, I turned to my right and was about to start something—I’m really glad I didn’t. Suddenly, I felt something hit me really hard on my right ear, and I thought, ‘Wow, what was that?’ It had to be a bullet. I instinctively touched my ear, and when I pulled my hand away, it was just covered in blood—everywhere. Right then, I realized it was serious and that we were under attack.”

“I dropped to the ground as bullets were flying everywhere. The Secret Service, really brave as they are, rushed to the stage to protect me. They put themselves at great risk, and I can’t say enough about how amazing they are. They jumped on top of me to shield me. In a way, I felt pretty safe because I really believed God was on my side. The crazy part is that if I hadn’t moved my head at the last second, that assassin’s bullet would have hit me perfectly, and I wouldn’t be here right now.”

“Tonight, we won’t be together. The craziest part of that awful night as the sun was setting is something we realized later. As you probably know, in most situations, when even one shot is fired, people panic and rush for the exits. But that didn’t happen this time. It was really strange. This huge crowd of thousands didn’t budge an inch. In fact, a lot of them stood up bravely, instinctively looking for where the shooter was coming from and started pointing.”

“Look over there at him. If you check out the group behind me, you’ll see it was just a small crowd compared to what was up front. Nobody panicked and ran off, and because they stayed calm, a lot of lives were saved. But that wasn’t the main reason they didn’t move. They knew I was in deep trouble. They saw me go down, they saw the blood, and honestly, most of them thought I was dead. They figured it was a shot to the head. The blood was everywhere, and there’s an interesting fact: the ears tend to bleed the most.”

“Your ears really bleed more than any other part of your body, for some reason. The doctors were like, ‘Why is there so much blood?’ And they told me, ‘It’s just the ears; they bleed a lot.’ So, we learned something there. But the crowd around me was just amazing. They didn’t want to leave me; they knew I was in trouble. You could see the love on their faces—just incredible people. Seriously, they were remarkable. Even with bullets flying over us, I felt so calm. But now…”

The Secret Service agents were really putting themselves in danger. They were in a pretty risky spot, with bullets whizzing right past them—close enough that they could feel the heat. Then, all of a sudden, it went quiet. Our sniper, positioned far away, took out the assassin with just one shot.
